South Florida Sports
Palm Beach County’s climate makes outdoor activity a pleasure all year long. The superb sporting facilities available – from fishing piers and marinas to polo grounds and golf courses – make your choices seem endless. Water sports are always popular, but this area is rich in other opportunities as well.
Golf and Tennis
Golf and tennis are two of the major sports that have abundant facilities in Boca Raton and Palm Beach County. Take a look at our links to find one near you.
Polo
The “sport of kings” continues to grow in popularity. The action-packed matches are as much fun for the spectators as they are for the participants. The polo seasons runs from January through April and high stakes matches draw large crowds. The Royal Palm Polo Sports Complex is the oldest club in SouthFlorida – the 60 year old club is known as the sport’s winter capital. In March, the Polo Club hosts the $100,000 International Gold Cup Tournament. Other clubs in Palm Beach County are The Palm Beach Polo Club in Wellington and the Gulfstream Polo Grounds in Lake Worth.
Biking / Running / In-line Skating
Boca Raton has both a Bicycle Club and Road Runners Club that meet various times of the week. There is also a bicycle Motocross (BMX) track located at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach open to all members of the National Bicycle League. There is also the Triathlon Club and Gold Coast Runners Club in West Palm Beach, which host events throughout the year. Palm Beach County also has several parks and other areas that are well suited for in-line skating.
Croquet
Croquet is another sport that has a very heavy following. With 250 clubs in the nation, 16 of them are in Palm Beach County. The National Croquet Championship is played here every year, and the Croquet’s governing body, the United States Croquet Association is located at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens.
Spectator Sports
If you’d rather watch than participate, Palm Beach County also has a multitude of spectator sporting opportunities. The tricounty area hosts some of the finest sporting events, including the Delray Beach Winter Tennis Championships, the Lipton Tennis Championships, the Miami Grand Prix, the Doral Ryder Open, the Orange Bowl, the Car Quest Bowl and the PGA Tour.
Professional Sports
We also have professional sports teams, including the Miami Heat, the Miami Dolphins, the Florida Marlins, and the Florida Panthers. Two major league baseball teams conduct spring training in South Florida – the L.A. Dodgers in Vero Beach and the Montreal Expos in West Palm Beach.
Jai Alai
Thousands of fans watch and wager on Jai Alai, the world’s fastest ball game. The words mean “merry festival.” Balls travel at speeds of more than 185 miles per hour as opponents do battle on an enclosed court. The season runs from November through April and admission ranges from $1 – $3.
Greyhound Racing
The sixth most popular spectator sport in the country, greyhound racing takes place year round at the Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm Beach and Biscayne Kennel Club in Miami. Enjoy matinee or evening races in the comfort of an air-conditioned clubhouse.
Equestrian
Boca offers easy access to lovely Gulfstream Park Race Track, home of the $500,000 Florida Derby and the Breeders Cup. It’s also not far from historic flamingo-studded Hialeah Park, the 20- year old Calder Racetrack or Pompano Race Track. There are also numerous horseback riding facilities with scenic trails throughout Palm Beach County.
Motorsports
Moroso Motorsports Park located in Palm Beach Gardens has a variety of events including road racing, drag racing, motorcycles, air shows, concerts, festivals and car shows. Events are held year round.
